May 30, in a much anticipated ruling, an HHS appeals
panel lifted the Medicare program’s exclusions for the treatment of transgender
people. The ruling represents a significant victory for the principle that
treatment for gender dysphoria, including hormone therapy and transition-related
surgery, is medically necessary.
GLMA congratulates our colleagues at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, ACLU and Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders who brought about this change in policy, which will enable transgender people covered under Medicare to receive the healthcare they need and deserve.
The National Center for Transgender Equality has issued a fact sheet on the ruling and what it means for transgender individuals.
GLMA pledges to continue its work to ensure that health policy affecting LGBT people is based in science and to work with HHS and our partners to provide the expertise of our health professional members as a resource in advocacy efforts. Published by GLMA.
